Long-staple cotton can be spun into smoother, stronger, finer yarn - enabling higher thread counts without sacrificing quality.

Can be jammed to high thread counts, but the fabric feels heavy and coarse. Numbers lie.

It all starts with the raw cotton. We source the world's finest long-staple cotton - from the banks of the Nile to select Indian varieties. The quality of the staple determines everything that follows: how smooth the yarn, how fine the weave, how luxurious the hand.
Common misconceptions about thread count — debunked by master weavers.
A 1000-thread-count sheet made from short-staple cotton will feel heavy and coarse. A 400-thread-count sheet from long-staple Egyptian cotton with sateen weave will feel like sleeping on a cloud. Thread count matters, but fiber quality and construction matter more.
Cotton fiber length (staple) varies dramatically. Long-staple cotton spins into finer, smoother, stronger yarn - meaning more threads per inch without sacrificing softness. Short-staple cotton can be crammed in, but the result is rough and pills quickly.
Three other factors are equally important: fiber quality (staple length), construction (weave structure, picks per inch), and finishing (mercerization, brushing, calendering). At Vatan, we fine-tune every variable - the way a vintner understands grapes.
Mercerization plumps the cotton fibers, giving fabric greater luster, strength, and dye absorption. Most of Vatan's cotton sheets are mercerized. However, we intentionally skip Sanforizing (shrink-proofing), preferring to cut generously to allow for natural shrinkage - preserving the fabric's character.
Some manufacturers inflate thread count by counting individual plies in multi-ply yarn (a 2-ply yarn counted as 2 threads instead of 1). At Vatan, we say: trust your hand. Feel the fabric. The difference between genuine quality and marketing is something your fingertips already know.
Nothing feels better than getting into bed nestled in the world's most luxurious linens.
