The Craft Behind the Fabric

Understanding Thread Count

Thread count matters — but it's only one part of the story. Explore what truly makes a sheet luxurious, from fiber to finish.

Weave Structures

The same thread count feels completely different depending on the weave. Click to explore.

Percale

Crisp, cool, matte. One-over-one-under weave. Feels like a fresh cotton shirt.

Sateen

Silky, lustrous, smooth. Four-over-one-under weave. The luxury hotel standard.

Jacquard

Intricate patterns woven into the fabric itself. Vatan's specialty for 110+ years.

It All Starts With the Fiber

Long-staple cotton can be spun into smoother, stronger, finer yarn - enabling higher thread counts without sacrificing quality.

Egypt
Egyptian Long-Staple

Grown on the banks of the Nile. The longest, finest cotton fiber in the world. Spins into silken yarn.

Staple length: 36-40mm
India
Indian Long-Staple

Select Indian varieties with long staple length. Spun by the finest mills in South India.

Staple length: 30-35mm
USA
Pima / Supima

American extra-long staple cotton. Strong, soft, and durable with excellent luster.

Staple length: 34-38mm
Generic
Short-Staple Cotton

Can be jammed to high thread counts, but the fabric feels heavy and coarse. Numbers lie.

Staple length: 20-25mm

Selecting the Fiber

It all starts with the raw cotton. We source the world's finest long-staple cotton - from the banks of the Nile to select Indian varieties. The quality of the staple determines everything that follows: how smooth the yarn, how fine the weave, how luxurious the hand.

Did you know? The Nile floods leave behind fertile soil that nourishes cotton with the longest fibers on Earth - up to 40mm per staple.

Myth vs. Reality

Common misconceptions about thread count — debunked by master weavers.

"Higher thread count = better sheets"

Myth

A 1000-thread-count sheet made from short-staple cotton will feel heavy and coarse. A 400-thread-count sheet from long-staple Egyptian cotton with sateen weave will feel like sleeping on a cloud. Thread count matters, but fiber quality and construction matter more.

"All cotton is the same"

Myth

Cotton fiber length (staple) varies dramatically. Long-staple cotton spins into finer, smoother, stronger yarn - meaning more threads per inch without sacrificing softness. Short-staple cotton can be crammed in, but the result is rough and pills quickly.

"Thread count is the only number that matters"

Myth

Three other factors are equally important: fiber quality (staple length), construction (weave structure, picks per inch), and finishing (mercerization, brushing, calendering). At Vatan, we fine-tune every variable - the way a vintner understands grapes.

"Mercerized sheets are higher quality"

Fact

Mercerization plumps the cotton fibers, giving fabric greater luster, strength, and dye absorption. Most of Vatan's cotton sheets are mercerized. However, we intentionally skip Sanforizing (shrink-proofing), preferring to cut generously to allow for natural shrinkage - preserving the fabric's character.

"You can trust the label"

Myth

Some manufacturers inflate thread count by counting individual plies in multi-ply yarn (a 2-ply yarn counted as 2 threads instead of 1). At Vatan, we say: trust your hand. Feel the fabric. The difference between genuine quality and marketing is something your fingertips already know.

Trust Your Hand

Nothing feels better than getting into bed nestled in the world's most luxurious linens.
